Swarnachari is the most resplendent version of Baluchari sarees out there. The craft dates back 200 years to the time of the Nawab of Bengal, Murshidkuli Khan. A patron of art and traditions, the nawab brought this art form from Bangladesh and established it in the small village named Baluchar (Balu meaning sand and char meaning river bank) in Murshidabad. A village that drowned in the rampaging Bhagirathi and its artisans and weavers shifted to Bishnupur in the Bankura district. Many years and many hurdles later this almost dying art was given a lease of life by the famous artist Subho Thakur.
Today, “Gaatha,” or গাথা in Bengali meaning “story”, reverently pays homage to this rich legacy. These sarees are born of passion and reverence for the craft, seeking to epitomize the timeless allure of Swarnachari sarees. As we bring these resplendent sarees to the world, we also weave the enchanting tale of Bengal’s traditional silk weaving, a story that transcends time and continues to grace the world with its everlasting elegance.
